Hrithik Ka Jadoo Chalege Kya
There's Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and now Indian cinema gets its very own Krrish with superstar Hrithik Roshan enacting the role of a mythical hero hidden behind a mysterious mask who conquers all evil.

Dual identities and anonymity have been common traits of Hollywood comic book superheroes and Hrithik just takes over from where he left audiences in father Rakesh Roshan's earlier hit "Koi... Mil Gaya", which also touched on the supernatural.

While the lovable alien Jadoo played a key role in "Koi... Mil Gaya", the sequel "Krrish" has a mysterious mask playing a significant part. Of course, it is no ordinary mask and is pivotal in the transformation of Krishna, the simple boy in dhoti prancing in the fields, to Krrish, the enigmatic black caped hero looking down at the glittering skyline of a big city.

Krrish as we can imagine gets all his extraordinary powers from a mask.

The mask is introduced in the film when a circus tent catches fire. Krishna, who is also there, spots the mask and gets supernatural powers when he wears it. He uses the power to save people.

Throughout the film Hrithik ducks in and out of his mask to protect his real identity and this is said to be one of the USPs of "Krrish".

The film combines rare special effects wizardry and action-packed fantasy to create a truly spectacle film. Interestingly, however, it does not show bloodshed or violence in any form.

"There is no bloodshed or fisticuffs in the film. The action is on a higher, conceptual plain of visual thrills. It has a multidimensional effect when projected on screen and I am sure it will be a feast for audiences of all ages and their inherent tastes," director Rakesh Roshan told.

As always in all his films, be it "King Uncle" or "Koi... Mil Gaya", children play an important role in this Rakesh Roshan film too.

Keeping children in mind, Roshan has pooled resources from two schools instead of signing child artistes.

He roped in 15 students from the Chao Yang Special School of Singapore and 16 from Delhi's Shri Ram School for various scenes, including a song. The entire sequence with the kids was shot near the Kallang river in Singapore.

Roshan shot the film extensively in Singapore and plans to hold the premiere of the film in that country as a goodwill gesture with the entire cast and crew in attendance.

"Krrish", which is slated for June release, is partly promoted by the Singapore Tourism Board and The Indian Women's Association of Singapore.

Rekha, who is Roshan's lucky mascot, plays Hrithik's grandmother and Priyanka Chopra is his leading lady in the film.

While Preity Zinta will make a guest appearance, Naseeruddin Shah, most recently seen in Homi Adajania's dark comedy "Being Cyrus", will be seen in an important but small role.

To have a superhero as the protagonist of a film is a novel concept for Indian celluloid. It has to be seen whether Hrithik surpasses the invincible Hollywood superheroes and proves to be a bigger one.

Now Aamir Khan cares a damn

Three months after its theatrical release Rang De Basanti continues to be one of the most hotly discussed films of all times.

What is it about the film that makes it such a favourite topic of debate and discussion among even the most cynical sections of movie-going audiences?

Even those who had given up on patritiotism as a cinematic affectation that went out of style with Manoj Kumar, have woken up to the reality that Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra so pungently projects in his part-history, part-fictional depiction of the Great Indian Post-Independence Depression.

Why are we so smug in our belief that nothing can ever change? Rang De Basanti is a reformist drama with a rhythm of storytelling that's as syncopated as it is sublime. You really don't know what you're getting into. To get fully into it we need to re-live the film's lucid dialogues and scenes in more detail than affordable to us in a movie theatre.

This is where the newly released DVD of Rang De Basanti (Sony-BMG) comes in. Here at your finger-tips, is the indescribable magic of the film.

The film's unique design and format whereby the seven protagonists (Aamir Khan, Sidharth, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Soha Ali Khan and the delightfully unselfconscious Alice Patten) merge into a historical pastiche without becoming lost in the rites and ranks of historical stock-taking, is indeed a unique moment in Indian cinema.

Add to that the consistent effort to tell the story in ways that avoid the pitfalls of clichés…and we have a film that never ceases to create a stir of echoic references and counterpoints.

Like all true works of art, Rang De Basanti has layers upon layers of meaning that become apparent on repeated viewing.

The film's greatest virtue lies not in its synthesis of history and headlines but in the way the director bends the rules of cinema to create the most iconoclastic and original work of art since Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai.

…Except that Aamir in Farhan's film didn't care a damn. In Rakeysh's film he's forced to look beyond the intimate and immediate allegiances of love and duty. Post-Basanti Aamir cares a damn…and about issues such as the dam.

Look beyond yourself.. This film creates spaces where patriotism nudges cyncism out of the frames. Belief replaces flippancy and the cinema of escapism finally escapes into a reality that doesn't seem selfimportant

See Ash is 30+ and successful
Age is not a factor for actresses to get more film offers and real acting starts only after 30, Bollywood star Urmila Matondkar said.

"Age is no bar ... Aishwarya Rai who has crossed 30 is getting more films. In fact, film actresses become more popular after crossing the age of 30," Matondkar, who was here to inaugurate a garment showroom, told newspersons.

She said she was getting more films now and her next movie 'Speed' would be releasing shortly.

The 'Rangeela' girl said she was also acting in a film directed by eminent filmmaker Shyam Benegal but the name of the venture has not been announced yet.

Asked whether she was also acting in any film by Ram Gopal Verma, who has directed her in many a hit movies, she said "please ask him about this."

Bipasha Basu had no mentor and no camps. Yet she has made it in the big league. This year, she has quite a few films lined up for release. In a chat with TWF correspondent Vickey Lalwani, she talks about her career and future plans.

Q: Have you made mistakes and learnt from them?
A: Who doesn't make mistakes? Is anybody perfect? I made mistakes initially, since I do not come from a filmi background. Actually, I am a very headstrong girl.

If I want to do something I will do it, no matter what it takes. I have the courage to admit my mistake. I am not embarrassed of anything that I have done in this industry and I have not hurt anyone by what I am doing. I am very clean on that.

Q: Ever repented that you did not have a godfather?
A: You must be kidding. I am very confident and never pessimistic. Half the battle is won if you are positive in life. I knew my work will do the talking. As an outsider, my path has been, perhaps, a little more difficult than those of star kids. But ultimately the audiences have to like you. Today I am proud of the fact that I am a familiar name.

Q: Why did you start doing so many multi-starrers?
A: I worked so hard on so many films - like 'Madhoshi', 'Rakht' and 'Chehra', which no one even saw. But I smartened up after all the flops. And decided to do some multi-starrers. 'No Entry' was part of this scheme of mine.

It was while doing this film I realised that I was enjoying working in a multi-starrers. If you can make your presence felt among ten other actors, you know that you have done a truly good job.

Q: But you are solo in 'Corporate'?
A: In 'Corporate', I will be seen with nearly 35 actors. So you can't call it a solo film per se. It was great working with Madhur Bhandarkar. At this point, I am doing films only with people I am comfortable with. I am even doing some special appearances because I want to work with certain filmmakers. But please note that I am not in the rat race.

Q: Which are your forthcoming films?
A: 2005 was a good year for me and I hope that 2006 follows suit. I now await the release of 'Phir Hera Pheri', 'Dhoom 2' and 'Corporate' this year. Added to this, work is fast moving on Vishal Bhardwaj's film based on Othello and Abbas Mastan's untitled next. Then, I will begin work on Rituparno Ghosh's 'Draupadi', next year.

Q: You almost didn't do 'Phir Hera Pheri'?
A: This is one more question where you will yet again get an honest reply. True, I had apprehensions about doing the film initially, when the director changed (Satish Kaushik was supposed to direct it). But then I weighed that Neeraj Vora was a good choice.

Q: What's your role in 'Phir Hera Pheri'?
A: I like doing comedy and I am pretty comfortable while doing it. It's not that I have become pucca expert at it, but I have fewer inhibitions about doing a comedy, now. With 'No Entry' and 'Phir Hera Pheri' I have taken a step forward and increased my repertoire of acting.

Q: That didn't answer my question?
A: Oh yeah! Like everyone else in the film, I am also running after money. For the better part of the film, the others are chasing me.

Q: Your tapes with an indecent conversation with a politican made national news, recently?
A: It was the first time I felt vulnerable in this industry. Nothing has affected me- breakups, flops, fatness- but this is the only time things were too much out of hand.

There is not an iota of truth in it. I felt cheated and violated. I cried and howled as child. I don't want an apology. I am still going ahead with my legal proceedings. I am trying to move it in my own way.

Q: What are your future plans?
A: I want to start a restaurant but do not have time for it right now. I could hire people to do it, but frankly I want to do it myself. I also want to have a fashion label and a health spa. All these, apart from getting married, of course.

Q: Something about John?
A: Time and again, I have spoken extensively about John. He is not a national monument for me to keep talking about him.

Q: John is passionate about bikes. And you are passionate about?
A: My passion is to work out, eat good and be good to my family, friends and my boyfriend. I am a very basic and simple person. Frankly, I am too simple

Ban the 'Story of a Sexy Nun'
A petition filed in the Bombay high court today sought a ban on film "Tickle My Funny Bone" contending that its advertisement posters had hurt religious sentiments of the people.

The petition filed by advocate Gerry Coelho is slated to come up for hearing tomorrow before Justice Vijaya Kapse-Tahilramani and Justice D G Deshpande.

The petition alleged that the posters and advertisements of the film showed an actor dressed as a nun and had a church in the background with a caption "the story of a sexy nun".

The petition urged the court to ban the film, slated for release this month, and also order seizure of the prints and posters as it had hurt the religious sentiments of the people.
